This I Believe

A few weeks ago in journalism class we listened to a This I Believe article. The article was about a women who worked at a diner and she talked about how growing up her parents always told her not to talk to strangers.  But in her essay she did talk to a stranger. It was an old man who would come to the diner every day and order the same meal. She would sit down and have conversations with him like they were family or best friends. She talked about how she stopped seeing him for while. She got a phone call and they told her that he was in the hospital and he wanted to see her. And later he had died.

I think that in situations like this it is good to talk to strangers but then again its not because that person is a stranger. You don’t know that person. You don’t know their back round or what they are about. So therefore you cant just speak to random people. Some people could be killers looking for their next victim. And that could be you. So in some cases talking to stranger can be good but it could also be bad.

Fair or Unfair ?

This week I read an Empower article on women who is suing UT (University Of Texas) because she applied there and they didn’t except her. When she got denied minority students were accepted. She felt as though they denied her of race and her being Caucasian she felt as though she should have been chose because of her race and because of her grades. Some colleges have a program called the Affirmative Action Program, which allows minority students the chance to attend college. They also base their spaces on students who grades put them in the top 10 percent of their high school. The women’s grades didn’t qualify. She is now suing them and they took it to the Supreme Court.

I think that the lady who is suing Ut is crazy, because her grades didn’t put her in the position for the school and she is suing then because she thinks that since she is Caucasian she should have been accepted first. She thinks that minority students should be allowed an education over Caucasians. I think she is completely out of her mind. And I am not saying this because I am a minority student but everyone disserves a chance. That’s why President John F. Kennedy created this law in the first place. People should not be turned down because of color of their skin or the sound of their voice. Everyone should be treated the same. People say life isn’t fair but if life isn’t far shouldn’t education be. People talk about others not having a job but most managers only except people of their race. I think this is a case of racism and it needs to be fixed.

New Fashion Wrinkle

In Journalism class we read an article about  new fashion wrinkle: Stylishly hiding the gun. the article talked about how clothing company's are make clothes tat you could hide your gun in. it talked about how the companies have made more money on the clothing since they changed the law on concealed hand guns. some of the clothing the article talked about was the a "light weight water resistant vest. it looks to be a regular vest but had gun pockets. it has pockets to make it look like the person is warming their hands but the person is gripping the gun."

I think that by people making their clothes to fit guns in them is telling people that it is safe to have handheld weapons on them. I think that clothing companies should not do this to their clothing because it is taking control of peoples mind. When one person does something other people see that and the makes them think that if one person does that then it is okay for them to do it too. If this keeps happening by the summer of 2012, everyone will be wearing cute clothes but underneath their clothing could be a weapon. This allows people to use violence but because of their clothing people wouldn’t even know that they have a gun. Its basically a way to say that everyone can hold a gun.

Broadcasting a World Of Whiteness

This week in journalism class we read an article about broadcasting and how some TV shows should be more diverse. It talked about a show on HBO that has all white cast members. Most reviews about the show are good but some people think the show should be diverse. The article talks about diversity and how it is reflected in bodies. Most people think this is an act of bringing racism back out and they think TV shows show make sure their shows are diverse so that all people can feel welcome.

I agree with some of the comments in the article. I think TV shows should make their shows diverse because what if a little girl watches the show a d she only sees white people she probably would start think that she isn’t good enough to be on a show like that and it could crush her dreams. I agree that this is an act of racism not that the shows are trying to be racist but by not diver sing the shows can make it portray that way. Looking at most of the shows on TV is kind of diverse while other is more diverse. I just think that people should make it their job to diverse the TV show.

Last week at Parkway West High School, the seniors held a health fair as a part of their senior project. the health fair mainly contained like healthy eating, STD protection and the importance of using condoms and abortion and things of that nature. the seniors brought in speakers to come out and talk to some of the younger grades about the topic of their projects. they had free condoms and they were handing out fruit. and they were asking questions about your health.

i liked the health fair. i think it was a good way to show underclassmen that health is important and that you should be careful of the things you do. it was a good way to teach kids how to stay healthy and stay on top of being healthy and making sure they used condoms if they were sexually interactive. some of the guest were asking questions and one of them happened to be "If you were about to have a sexual intercourse and you weren't sure if the person you were going t do it with was infected or not , would you ask them to put on a condom." most of the students replied yes. i was one of them. overall the health fair did god i enjoyed it. it was a way of them showing that they care abut youths health.

Over a month ago Trayvon Martin was murdered by George Zimmerman, a local watch person. the news was released on wednesday. he was charged with 2nd degree murder. new say that "the decision wasnt based on prosecuted by public pressure or by petition. We prosecute based on the facts in any given case, as well as the laws of the state of Florida."  this child was killed over two months ago and they just come to an agreement. Zimmerman will be incarsarated for the rest of his life.http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/04/12/tagblogsfindlawcom2012-blotter-idUS371331303320120412

i think this was a good decision because you cant have a killer walking around the streets. you cant have somebody walking around waiting for a new victim. that murderer could be on a killing spree. they could be linked up to a lot of other murders and you would never know because you think he is innocent because of their race. you cant base everything on ace and this case was basically based on race. george should have bee arrested for more than just murder. he should be arrested for holding  fire arm. did the police ask him for a liscence for the fire arm that he murdered Trayvon with. i just think that race shouldnt be the way you look at a person.

For Women Under 30, Most Births Occur Outside Marriage

In journalism class we read an article about how women are getting pregnant and most of them are not married. The article stated that the percentage had risen and it has become the "new normal." the article said that now women don’t have to depend on mean as for back in the days they did. Women now can take care of them selves and provide for their children without the need of male assistance. It stated that marriage has become a "luxury good." and that most people think that marriage is just a piece of paper and most people only get married for the money or just for the look and to satisfy others. The article gives quotes from women saying, “We support ourselves. We support our kids.”

When I first read this article I related to most of the things that were said because when I was born my mother and father were not married and they broke up when I was about four. Now my mom is there more than my dad. She looks at herself as to be the mother and father to my little sister and me. The things that were said in the article were like basically reviewing on my mother and how she feels. Most marriages end in the man running away with another women leaving the family with problems with money and the family would be like unstable with their house and food causing the family to get on food stamps.

Student Arrested For Assaulting A Dean

Today I read an article about a boy who assaulted his dean at Gratz high school in Philadelphia. The student was in a pupils program and began to argue with a girl in his class. He began to chase the girl and the dean got in the middle of it. The boy returned to class and started to argue again with the girl but this time the boy approached the dean from behind and grabbed her and threw her on the ground. She went to the hospital but wasn’t severely hurt. The cops arrested to 17 year old and he is being charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, and reckless endangerment.

I really don't know how to feel about this situation I mean the dean was doing her job as a staff member to break up the argument and was assaulted. She didn’t do anything wrong and the boy should not have been arguing with a girl in the first place. The boy was wrong and should be arrested but other than that leave this situation to the principle and the police. They should be able to handle this and the boy should get what he deserves.

Facebook Is Using You

Yesterday we read an article about how people can get declined loans just because of their online profile. It was proved that while you’re on Google the companies you go too could track everything you ever searched and use that information against you. The article stated that a man came back from his honeymoon and received a credit limit was lowered to $3,800 from $10,800 but it wasn’t because of anything he did. It was because other customers used their cards at places that he did and they had poor repayment history. The article is basically saying that any company can tract everything you ever searched on a computer. The writer wants a no tracking law.

I agree with the writer. A lot of people have been declined loans and health care due to searched they made on a computer. Some people have even lost their jobs. The article even states that facebook makes their money off of you. Suppose you put a status up about engagements a few seconds’ later ads pop up about great places to get married and that’s mainly how facebook makes their money.

Im A Criminal

A few days ago I read an article called “I’m a criminal And So Are You”. The article mainly was about how people who go to jail and serve thee time for the crime they committed and after they get out they don’t have a lot of rights , at least not the same rights as people who haven’t been to jail. The article also stated that everyone has committed a crime but the people who are locked up were the only ones that were caught. The writer says that everyone has committed a crime or broke the law before there for everyone should have equal rights doesn’t matter what you did because you have already served your time .
I agree with the writer. I think that if a person gets out of jail after they have served there time to society they should be allowed to have full citizenship and be apart of the community , they shouldn’t be treated any different. A person has did they’re twenty five years in prison and they have changed there life around they shouldn’t be treated any different than a person who has a committed a crime but just hasn’t been caught. People shouldn’t be discriminated on everyone should be able to participate in everything that is going on. Half the people that were put in jail didn’t even do the crimes. The were falsely accused. And when they get out of jail people look down upon them. In conclusion people shouldn’t be treated differently because a crime they committed almost thirty-five years ago.

Photoshopped or Not? A Tool to Tell

A few days ago I read an article about pictures being photoshopped or not. The article basically stated that most magazines have found ways to photoshop there pictures and make the people look bigger or skinnier then the picture really showed. It also said that photoshoping pictures isn’t good because the young girls that read the articles might try to be like them girls and they think that photoshoping will lead to teen starvation and maybe even death.

I think that the person who wrote the article is right because a lot of girls want to be like the models they see on the magazines and they might go all out just to be skinny . they might even starve their self just to be like the models and I don’t think that is cool. People should not starve them selves to be like some one else when you yourself is a beautiful person. You should be youself before you try to be somebody else.

Man Killed During pizza

On January 3rd a man was killed after delivering a pizza to an abandon house in southwest Philadelphia. The man had made the delivery and before he could even walk to the door, two men came out the house and shot him multiple times and all they got away with was the pizza. The police just found the four people that were involved in the murder and they all were arrested. One of them had just graduated from John Bartram High School.

This incident was very tragic because he was a normal pizza guy and the suspects found out that he was making money and they wanted him dead. The girls called the pizza store and ordered it to and abandon house in southwest and the two men shot him constantly. The crazy thing about this murder was that the girl that made the call to the pizza store was a friend of my cousin and one of the men that shot the pizza guy was my cousin’s boyfriend cousin. That’s crazy right. This murder was unnecessary because if you see a person doing good and making money you could be happy for them and would ant to get were they are or strive to do better. You should never hate people for what they have you should strive to do better or the best that you can.

Tovoyia Owens

Last year on February 7th, a good friend of mine Tovoyia Owens was assaulted outside of traffic court. She was four months pregnant and was a mother to a 3-year-old daughter. Tovoyia, also known as “Toya” was a student at Cheyney University and she worked at two of the rite-aid pharmacies.  Toya went to traffic court to get her car back and she knew that she didn’t have enough money so she went to get more from her boyfriend. When she went outside two men approached her and they started to fight. She was driven to Hahnemann hospital where they said she was dead.

Tovoyia was a close friend of mine, she was so funny and loving towards everyone and for somebody to do this to her is just wrong. Toya was there for everyone, if you needed her she was there, no second questioning about it. For a person, let alone a male to brutally beat on a women is wrong and they are going to get what is coming for them. A male is always going to be physically stronger than a woman so they know in heir hear that they would really hurt a female even if they weren’t trying too. For a male to hit a female without any concern at all is wrong and the world shouldn’t be this way. Woman shouldn’t be worried about whether a male is going to hit her if she looks at him the wrong way. Males should respect women because what if a male hit your mother and killed her, how would feel. How would you feel of a random person hit on your sister and killed her for no reason. Think about it.

R.I.P Toya , you are dearly missed . love you

Most important news article of 2011

In 2011 Beyonce made it known worldwide that she was pregnant. A lot of news reporters and magazines thought that it was fake because he stomach had got bigger and they thought that she was wearing a baby bump, or she just flat out faked it. But on January 7th 2011, beyonce gave birth to Blue Ivy Carter. Abc news says that beyonce and jay-z said “hello hello hello baby Blue.”

I don’t think beyonce faked her pregnancy, who are they to make news articles and write stories about her and she’s done nothing to you. I think people should mind their own business because they don’t really know if she was or wasn’t pregnant, they shouldn’t be able to put out articles in the news paper or put out magazines of her because they don’t know the whole story, they only know what the heard on TV or read online. They shouldn’t make judgments on her when nobody ever asked her side of the stories. People should not be allowed to post stories about somebody that makes ten times more money than them. People are also making comments about baby Blue Ivy Carter , that baby is only 2 weeks old and already has more money in then everybody in that has made a bad comment about her will ever strive to make. People should just stop being haters and be happy that beyonce has her baby. If she is happy you shouldn’t try to make her upset.

Yesterday I read an article about teen break ups. This article was mainly about what a healthy and un-healthy break up is. It also had some ideas on facebook break ups. The article stated that you shouldn’t run home after school and change your facebook status and update you relationship status because that is un-healthy and isn’t good for your emotions. It also stated that when you break up with somebody you should “face it, don’t facebook it.”

I agree with this article because most statements made in the article are true, but when one person said that “when we break up, its over i'm done with you.” I don’t believe that because when most couples break up they have a tendency to start talking to each other again because they might still have feelings for that person or just miss that old thing that they used to have. I also think that when people break up they should distance their self from that other person for them to feel like the break up was convenient and they didn’t just do it for no reason. I also think people shouldn’t put their business on facebook its bad for them and it just a open diary for 100 million people to see it.

Jerry Sandusky

about a month ago , Jerry Sandusky was arrested for child abuse. it was told that during a summer camp jerry would molest boys in the locker room. after Jerry was arrested more people came out and said that they were abused by him. jerry had went back to jail and served time. 2 of the victims thought they were strong enough to testify. the article stated that "at a hearing, some charges that he sexually abused them over a 15 year period."

When I read this article I was disgusted with his actions. How could a person be so cruel to minors and do this to them. This could traumatize them for the rest of there lives and put them in a situation were they wouldn’t want to be left alone with a man ever again. How could somebody be so self-centered and not think about the minors lives and how it would effect them. How does Sandusky thin the parents felt about their child going way to football camp and coming back home telling her that he/she was raped and didn’t feel safe around adults again. I fell as though Jerry should go to jail and see what they do to him there and see how it feels to be in the minor’s shoes for a change or to feel the pain that they felt when he traumatized them.

Plan B

a few weeks ago , president obama kept the law restriction on plan b . the article states that they didnt want to lower the restriction because as a parent he didnt want his 10 year old going to the stores and buying birth control alongside bubble gum. He basically said in the article that making the changes on age restrictions was making it okay for underage girls to have sex and just buy birth control and it would be okay. Plan b is a back up birth control method similar to a heavy dose of the birth control pill and should be taken up to 72 hours after the intercourse to prevent pregnancy.

To me , I think it was good to keep the restrictions the same because girl my age should not be having sex and let alone be buying birth control. Some girls might be selling them or just showing them off and having unprotected sex and thinking it was okay. Some girls might even get it and be sneaky about it and their others wouldn’t know about it and that’s is disrespectful to their parents and would cause them to lose trust in their children. I feel as though if you legalize birth control you are making it okay for young females to have sex and that’s not cool , they need to be in school and not worrying about if there are pregnant or how they are going to get birth control.
