This I Believe

A few weeks ago in journalism class we listened to a This I Believe article. The article was about a women who worked at a diner and she talked about how growing up her parents always told her not to talk to strangers.  But in her essay she did talk to a stranger. It was an old man who would come to the diner every day and order the same meal. She would sit down and have conversations with him like they were family or best friends. She talked about how she stopped seeing him for while. She got a phone call and they told her that he was in the hospital and he wanted to see her. And later he had died.

I think that in situations like this it is good to talk to strangers but then again its not because that person is a stranger. You don’t know that person. You don’t know their back round or what they are about. So therefore you cant just speak to random people. Some people could be killers looking for their next victim. And that could be you. So in some cases talking to stranger can be good but it could also be bad.

Fair or Unfair ?

This week I read an Empower article on women who is suing UT (University Of Texas) because she applied there and they didn’t except her. When she got denied minority students were accepted. She felt as though they denied her of race and her being Caucasian she felt as though she should have been chose because of her race and because of her grades. Some colleges have a program called the Affirmative Action Program, which allows minority students the chance to attend college. They also base their spaces on students who grades put them in the top 10 percent of their high school. The women’s grades didn’t qualify. She is now suing them and they took it to the Supreme Court.

I think that the lady who is suing Ut is crazy, because her grades didn’t put her in the position for the school and she is suing then because she thinks that since she is Caucasian she should have been accepted first. She thinks that minority students should be allowed an education over Caucasians. I think she is completely out of her mind. And I am not saying this because I am a minority student but everyone disserves a chance. That’s why President John F. Kennedy created this law in the first place. People should not be turned down because of color of their skin or the sound of their voice. Everyone should be treated the same. People say life isn’t fair but if life isn’t far shouldn’t education be. People talk about others not having a job but most managers only except people of their race. I think this is a case of racism and it needs to be fixed.
