This I Believe

A few weeks ago in journalism class we listened to a This I Believe article. The article was about a women who worked at a diner and she talked about how growing up her parents always told her not to talk to strangers.  But in her essay she did talk to a stranger. It was an old man who would come to the diner every day and order the same meal. She would sit down and have conversations with him like they were family or best friends. She talked about how she stopped seeing him for while. She got a phone call and they told her that he was in the hospital and he wanted to see her. And later he had died.

I think that in situations like this it is good to talk to strangers but then again its not because that person is a stranger. You don’t know that person. You don’t know their back round or what they are about. So therefore you cant just speak to random people. Some people could be killers looking for their next victim. And that could be you. So in some cases talking to stranger can be good but it could also be bad.

Fair or Unfair ?

This week I read an Empower article on women who is suing UT (University Of Texas) because she applied there and they didn’t except her. When she got denied minority students were accepted. She felt as though they denied her of race and her being Caucasian she felt as though she should have been chose because of her race and because of her grades. Some colleges have a program called the Affirmative Action Program, which allows minority students the chance to attend college. They also base their spaces on students who grades put them in the top 10 percent of their high school. The women’s grades didn’t qualify. She is now suing them and they took it to the Supreme Court.

I think that the lady who is suing Ut is crazy, because her grades didn’t put her in the position for the school and she is suing then because she thinks that since she is Caucasian she should have been accepted first. She thinks that minority students should be allowed an education over Caucasians. I think she is completely out of her mind. And I am not saying this because I am a minority student but everyone disserves a chance. That’s why President John F. Kennedy created this law in the first place. People should not be turned down because of color of their skin or the sound of their voice. Everyone should be treated the same. People say life isn’t fair but if life isn’t far shouldn’t education be. People talk about others not having a job but most managers only except people of their race. I think this is a case of racism and it needs to be fixed.

New Fashion Wrinkle

In Journalism class we read an article about  new fashion wrinkle: Stylishly hiding the gun. the article talked about how clothing company's are make clothes tat you could hide your gun in. it talked about how the companies have made more money on the clothing since they changed the law on concealed hand guns. some of the clothing the article talked about was the a "light weight water resistant vest. it looks to be a regular vest but had gun pockets. it has pockets to make it look like the person is warming their hands but the person is gripping the gun."

I think that by people making their clothes to fit guns in them is telling people that it is safe to have handheld weapons on them. I think that clothing companies should not do this to their clothing because it is taking control of peoples mind. When one person does something other people see that and the makes them think that if one person does that then it is okay for them to do it too. If this keeps happening by the summer of 2012, everyone will be wearing cute clothes but underneath their clothing could be a weapon. This allows people to use violence but because of their clothing people wouldn’t even know that they have a gun. Its basically a way to say that everyone can hold a gun.

Broadcasting a World Of Whiteness

This week in journalism class we read an article about broadcasting and how some TV shows should be more diverse. It talked about a show on HBO that has all white cast members. Most reviews about the show are good but some people think the show should be diverse. The article talks about diversity and how it is reflected in bodies. Most people think this is an act of bringing racism back out and they think TV shows show make sure their shows are diverse so that all people can feel welcome.

I agree with some of the comments in the article. I think TV shows should make their shows diverse because what if a little girl watches the show a d she only sees white people she probably would start think that she isn’t good enough to be on a show like that and it could crush her dreams. I agree that this is an act of racism not that the shows are trying to be racist but by not diver sing the shows can make it portray that way. Looking at most of the shows on TV is kind of diverse while other is more diverse. I just think that people should make it their job to diverse the TV show.

Last week at Parkway West High School, the seniors held a health fair as a part of their senior project. the health fair mainly contained like healthy eating, STD protection and the importance of using condoms and abortion and things of that nature. the seniors brought in speakers to come out and talk to some of the younger grades about the topic of their projects. they had free condoms and they were handing out fruit. and they were asking questions about your health.

i liked the health fair. i think it was a good way to show underclassmen that health is important and that you should be careful of the things you do. it was a good way to teach kids how to stay healthy and stay on top of being healthy and making sure they used condoms if they were sexually interactive. some of the guest were asking questions and one of them happened to be "If you were about to have a sexual intercourse and you weren't sure if the person you were going t do it with was infected or not , would you ask them to put on a condom." most of the students replied yes. i was one of them. overall the health fair did god i enjoyed it. it was a way of them showing that they care abut youths health.

Over a month ago Trayvon Martin was murdered by George Zimmerman, a local watch person. the news was released on wednesday. he was charged with 2nd degree murder. new say that "the decision wasnt based on prosecuted by public pressure or by petition. We prosecute based on the facts in any given case, as well as the laws of the state of Florida."  this child was killed over two months ago and they just come to an agreement. Zimmerman will be incarsarated for the rest of his life.http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/04/12/tagblogsfindlawcom2012-blotter-idUS371331303320120412

i think this was a good decision because you cant have a killer walking around the streets. you cant have somebody walking around waiting for a new victim. that murderer could be on a killing spree. they could be linked up to a lot of other murders and you would never know because you think he is innocent because of their race. you cant base everything on ace and this case was basically based on race. george should have bee arrested for more than just murder. he should be arrested for holding  fire arm. did the police ask him for a liscence for the fire arm that he murdered Trayvon with. i just think that race shouldnt be the way you look at a person.

For Women Under 30, Most Births Occur Outside Marriage

In journalism class we read an article about how women are getting pregnant and most of them are not married. The article stated that the percentage had risen and it has become the "new normal." the article said that now women don’t have to depend on mean as for back in the days they did. Women now can take care of them selves and provide for their children without the need of male assistance. It stated that marriage has become a "luxury good." and that most people think that marriage is just a piece of paper and most people only get married for the money or just for the look and to satisfy others. The article gives quotes from women saying, “We support ourselves. We support our kids.”

When I first read this article I related to most of the things that were said because when I was born my mother and father were not married and they broke up when I was about four. Now my mom is there more than my dad. She looks at herself as to be the mother and father to my little sister and me. The things that were said in the article were like basically reviewing on my mother and how she feels. Most marriages end in the man running away with another women leaving the family with problems with money and the family would be like unstable with their house and food causing the family to get on food stamps.
